| Because was an elegant 1990s British art-pop project formed by singer-songwriter Jim Irvin and jazz pianist Chris Ingham | ||
| Bio: | The project was born out of the 1991 dissolution of Irvin's previous new wave band, Furniture (famous for the 1986 hit "Brilliant Mind"). Looking for a fresh direction, Irvin teamed up with East Anglian jazz musician Chris Ingham. Bound by a shared love for the lush textures of the Korg M1 synthesizer, the precise arrangements of Brian Wilson, and the ambient pop of The Blue Nile, the duo began tracking songs at home using rented gear. Their resulting musical identity combined minimalist electronic rhythms with jazz chords and Irvin’s poetic vocal delivery. Though the project only lasted for a single album, their debut Mad Scared Dumb And Gorgeous made a major critical splash upon its release on Haven Records. The record was longlisted for the very first Mercury Music Prize in 1992. Following the project, Jim Irvin transitioned into a highly successful career as a music journalist and founding features editor for Mojo Magazine, while Chris Ingham returned to the UK jazz circuit as an acclaimed performer, author, and quartet leader. |
